The real "Kill or Be Killed"

Let me repeat, I didn't make up "Kill or Be Killed". It's the first comic I've done based on a story and characters not written by me. It's based on a great martial arts movie shot in the 70s but released in the 80s. Now, I took some artistic liberties with the plot, but I just got a copy of the video, and I think by reading my comic, you'll get a pretty close approach to the real thing. Here's the castle in the desert...

...okay, so Chico's puppet in the movie is a voodoo doll in the comic. It's not like I'm making a photocopy of the film anyway...

American Idiot

Bush was just getting re-elected, I was in a bar in Toronto and they were playing the video of "American Idiot" on TV. No other record captured the pulse of the planet at the time I was living it like this one. Green Day was to me a good band, and "Dookie" is one of my favorite records ever, but I never I imagined they were capable of making, something I call a "masterpiece", until I heard this.

Appetite For Destruction

Purchased originally as: Cassette tape, Sam Goody, October 1987.

Even though I enjoyed Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi, no heavy metal band captured my imagination as fast and furious as this one. Once I heard "Welcome To The Jungle" on MTV's heavy rotation, I was a fan of Guns 'N' Roses forever. My music taste also became more rock and less pop after that.

Black Holes & Revelations

I was already a fan of Muse and heard them all the time on the radio. One day I decided this record had enough singles to warrant a whole purchase (I bought "Starlight" and "Supermassive Black Hole" as separate singles earlier). The moment I heard the track "Glorious" I knew it. This album convinced me that rock music was not going to die anytime soon. At the time I was becoming a runner, and this album reminds me of many jogs by Lake Michigan in Chicago.

The Downward Spiral

Purchased originally as: Compact disk, Tower Records, February 1994.

Nine Inch Nails' previous records were on my heavy rotation for a while. They came out at a time I was experiencing a lot of rage and frustration, and I believe these records (along with Rage Against The Machine's debut) helped me channel my angst into creativity. It took me a couple of listens to realize this was no regular album. It was noisy, chaotic and completely original. Sort of like, what I wanted to become. I ask one of my best buddies to listen to "Closer" (before it was a single) and we both had the same look in our faces that we were listening to a masterpiece.

Hysteria

Purchased originally as: Cassette tape, Sam Goody, October 1987.

I bought this record along with "Appetite For Destruction" and together they were the albums that defined me as a rock music fan. This was the ying to Appetite's yang. More pop, easier to get into, the rock was mellower, but still rocked. Two awesome power ballads were the icing on the cake ("Hysteria" and "Love Bites). Back in the day I bought it, I'd never realized I'd be still listening to its ubiquitous singles on the radio, 25 years later.

Legend

Purchased originally as: Vinyl LP, can't-remember-where, sometime in 1984.

When I was a kid there were records everyone owned: The "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack, Pink Floyd's "The Wall", the Eagle's "Hotel California", the Beatles "Abbey Road", but none of them I liked as much as this one. I also don't think I have listened to a record more in my life. Not only from me playing but every beach, bar, retail store, and public area they'd play it from top to bottom, I'd listen to it as if it was still new. This album is as part of my life as family and friends.

Nevermind

If I'd only put one record on this list, this would be it. This record changed my life on my first listen. A few months earlier, I bought the much-awaited Guns 'N' Roses new album. I couldn't listen to it anymore after "Nevermind", and that also went for all the similar bands I suddenly stopped liking. This was a new era, and I was living it, and I was proud of it. I finally found the music that defined my generation, my voice. As for landmarks in my life, I rank the first time I heard this record higher than the day I lost my virginity.

Reckless

Purchased originally as: Cassette tape, Sam Goody, May 1985.

One of the first records I've ever bought. Bryan Adams just played the kind of rock that was perfect for a 12-year-old. This is also one of the first albums I remember I liked from beginning to end (and my introduction to Canadian music). It had everything: peppy songs, hard songs, a power ballad, a duet, a plethora of hit singles. A little rocker was born.

The Stone Roses

Purchased originally as: Compact disk, Sam Goody, December 1989.

In 1990 a compact disk player could set you back $250 dollars (not adjusted to inflation), and I was starting a collection for my brand-new CD boom box. I remember I bought this because I liked the song "Made Of Stone", much played in MTV's 120 minutes. Now imagine this: You are a teen, used to listen to tapes hiss and LPs pop, and you have this sound as clear as day, and the record starts with a song that starts slowly with a bass groove, the volume goes higher, all the instruments are kicking in, and the singer sings "I Wanna Be Adored". Wow. If I'm into Britpop to this day, it's because of this record. Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, bow to your master.

Ten

After listening to "Nevermind" everything made before it, to me, started to sound crappy. I needed to go back to the records that predicted the coming of "Nevermind" so I could define my new taste in music. I got The Pixies, Jane's Addiction and Sonic Youth. But to move forward, I needed something new. And there, there was Pearl Jam to finish off what Nirvana started. Interestingly, the first time I heard Pearl Jam was in the summer of 1991 on a Coca-Cola promo mini CD featuring "Alive", and I remember clearly the art stated the song was "from the upcoming album Ten". I was a fan of Pearl Jam before I've ever heard of Nirvana, and I'm still a fan today.

Best Of Blondie

Purchased originally as: Compact disk, Columbia House, June 1991.

Blondie was the first band I've ever liked. I remember as a kid trying to sing to the tune of "The Tide is High". I was too young to have a crush on Debbie Harry (or Pat Benatar, or Joan Jett, to be fair) but I still think she was sexy as hell. When I started building my CD collection, this was top priority. Next to "Legend" it's the only greatest hits collection that has impacted me the most.

OK Computer

Purchased originally as: Compact disk, Amoeba Records, October 1997.

It was 1997. I was in San Francisco, had a Powermac with a 56K modem, and played "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night" on my Playstation. Around that time, the video of "Karma Police" was airing nonstop on MTV, and I believe it's the last video of the twilight of MTV before TRL and reality shows ruined it. This record is a testimony of that era. I can't mention the late 90s without this record in mind.

Unplugged in New York

Purchased originally as: Compact disk, Tower Records, November 1994.

I didn't know many of the records I listed here were going to have an impact in my life until after I while I purchased them. I knew this record was going to have an impact even before it came out. It was the first record after Kurt Cobain's death, and I've already seen the special a million times. It's both beautiful and painful. It's both hard to listen to and impossible not to. It's like revisiting pictures of a relationship that broke your heart. I wish I never have to listen to a record like this in my life, but I'm glad it exists.

"Mortal Death" is now "Kill Or Be Killed"

I decided that the movie "Kill Or Be Killed" is just too good for the loose adaptation I was planning to do. So, now is not such a loose adaptation (still is not going to be a straight-out copy of the script). Instead of calling it "Mortal Death" with Dick Johnson, is going to have its original American title with Steve Hunt as its protagonist. I finished the first three pages. I'll post it online soon. For many of you, this will be one of the few comics I make you'll be able to show to your kids. Yep. No sex, no nudity... for now.

I don't think anyone is reading my current project, but just in case, you may have noticed an improvement in the art lately. That is because I'm drawing the pages on my iPad, and no, I'm not using a pen. I'm drawing them with my right index finger! Turns out I draw better with my finger than with a pen (I already had a couple of illustrations on a gallery to prove it). The pages in this post are all proudly iPad-drawn.

So how are you going to keep up with my updates, being them so irregular? I thought about it too, and I added an RSS feed to this comic in particular. I think about everything, don't I?

Because I'm not posting the pictures on a database, I'm updating the RSS manually. That may change soon, since I have a new server that runs PHP (my old server was an iDisk). You don't need to know about this if you're not a developer geek. Enjoy!

San Francisco

Oh, the gorgeous, charming City by the Bay, right? Wait until you move there and get daily attacks by hordes of homeless guys, roaming the streets like zombies.

Los Angeles

I hope that you like your car, because that's where you're going to spend most of your life. It also applies to smaller cities I lived, like Austin, TX.

Chicago

Chicago only have two problems: September to May. Also, if you enjoy nightlife, forget weekdays.

My new responsive comics site

I decided to re-touch my comics site (yes, I'm bored) and make its design responsive. On the iPhone it looks as good as I could make it, and on the iPad, you can slide the pages, no need to push arrows. It was easier than I thought. Comic: "Preacher"

The Saint of Killers is the most badass villain ever conceived. No... He's the most badass character ever conceived, period. If I tell you the most badass thing he did, I'd have to spoil you the end of "Preacher".

9. John Constantine
Comic: "Hellblazer"

The cancer-stick smoking, trenchcoat-wearing detective of the occult was modeled after rockstar Sting, and somehow Hollywood decided Keanu Reeves was fit for the role.

8. Katchoo
Comic: "Strangers in Paradise"

"Strangers in Paradise" is a chick flick in comic book form. Too bad most women don't know it exist. Katchoo is a strong woman, yet vulnerable. Complex, mysterious and bi-sexual. Girl power in cartoon form.

7. Buster
Comic: "Tug & Buster"

Buster is a character similar to those you'd find in my comics. A kid with a man-crush, looking for "babes" and pretending to look tough. Also, cartoony, but only suitable for adults.

6. Harvey Pekar
Comic: "American Splendor"

Harvey was the most unique comic book character: A flesh-and-blood real person. Fiction is still no match from fact.

5. Marv
Comic: "Sin City"

When I first read "Sin City" in the early 90s, this brute left my jaw open. Unflinchingly violent and determined. Not the man you want to mess with.

4. Arseface
Comic: "Preacher"

Like me, Arseface suffered the death of Kurt Cobain. His sweetness and strange situations makes him the funniest villain in comics.

3. Magneto
Comic: "X-Men"

To me, the best villain in comics, mainly because he believes he's the good guy. Who knows? Maybe he is. Unlike many villains, whose purpose is to conquer/destroy the world for empty reasons, this man's anger and motivation comes from pain and suffering. The most interesting character in superhero comics.

2. Dorothy Lestrade
Comic: "Box Office Poison"

I have a crush on Dorothy. She's a trainwreck. A hopeless, irresponsible procrastinator, but she's also a good girlfriend. Nobody's perfect, and that's the point. I think she's cute.

1. Buddy Bradley
Comic: "Hate"

Buddy is around my age. I met him in his early 20s when he was the typical 90s slacker. I learned about his teens in the late 80s in the suburbs, a place where he's back now with his wife and kids. I grew up with Buddy, we lost out hair around the same time. He's like a friend to me, and my favorite comic book character ever.

I'm running the Brooklyn Half Marathon this weekend, and my unscientific research in race events have taken me to the conclusion that not all runners participating in them are alike. Runners are a diverse group, and these are the ones you'll most likely see in races like the one I'm doing...

1. THE ELITES

You know that blur you see and that swooshing sound you hear on races? It's them. A few of them are even the same nationality of President Obama (The United States).

T-SHIRT: The smallest possible. Even in winter.
KEY ACCESSORY: A bib with his/her name on it.

2. THE GADGETRONS

These quasi-cyborgs only invest in the latest running technology (and fads).

T-SHIRT: Ultra-moisture-wicking fabric with at least 10 patents.

KEY ACCESSORY: The GPS, heart-rate-monitor enhanced watch.

3. THE VETERANS

They're the pioneers, possibly running since the craze started in the 1970s, and they have the medals to prove it.

Does Latino Marketing Deserve a Bigger Pie? (No.)

Sorry to catch them with their pants down, but these are the Web sites of some of the most prominent Hispanic market agencies in the United States, viewed from Safari for the iPad. The iPad has been out for a year already. The iPhone has been out since 2007. Since then, it was clear to me by the middle of this decade that most people will be browsing the Web through mobile devices. Unsurprisingly, Hispanics are on the lead.

These marketing experts, however, treat their own brands like we're still in 2006. Their Flash sites look almost prehistoric next to what has been coming out for the last four years. Maybe they're awaiting Flash's triumphal arrival into the mobile Web. In the meantime, all mainstream U.S. advertising agencies moved on from the big mistake of full-Flash sites.

So ask yourself this question: Why should I give my advertising money to people who just react (rather slow) instead of lead?

I love drawing on my iPhone. I was hoping the Jesus Tablet was going to improve my experience to the point I could draw some comics with it. Unfortunately, its memory is not good enough for high-resolution images, so they look great on screen, but not on print. Essentially, the iPad is a toy. I'm having a bit of buyer's remorse. It's possible you'll find my iPad on an online auction site in the future. The illustration above was done with the iPad using Sketchbook Pro.

I think I hit rock bottom about three weeks ago when after many visits to doctors I learned that every illness I have: rapid weight gain, alcoholism, nightmares, snoring and even a skin condition called Alopecia Areata (those spots in my beard that don't grow hair you see in the picture) were caused by stress. I am a belt-busting 216 pounds from 183 in early 2009 when all started.

I'm old enough to have lived through several relationships. Some ended well, some didn't end well at all. They all however had one thing in common: When we broke up we were equal or better off than when we found each other.

Not this time.

I was with a person who I'm not going to mention by name, but she -and you know who she is- constantly questioned my loyalty, yet betrayed my trust every single time she had a chance. I was in a bad situation and she helped make it much, much, much worse. She left me way worse than how she found me.

I went from career-change mode to relationship-managing mode for a whole year. I was stressed every day because I didn't know in which mood she would wake up and either kick me out of her place (which she did several times) or kick me out of her social media connections (which she did several times). Somehow I managed every time to save the relationship, but not for long until she displayed she was unsatisfied with it. I should've known about her commitment-fobia when I got into it since she was recently divorced.

I couldn't play the hero all the time. The thing took its toll. I shot down. My mind went off and my body told me to let it go. So imagine today, the first time I take it for a spin in a while, how it reacted. Instead of saying to me "Thanks for taking me out, it's nice and sunny in Central Park" it was hurting and saying "Shit, I was doing fine at home. Just give me some fatty, salty food and some alcohol." I had to tell my body who's boss, so I ran it through the park (ok, half of it was walking) despite how much it cried. I have to get it in shape for the New York City Marathon. I've never ran a marathon before.

I'm surprised I'm not the gracious runner I was just months ago. It's like I'm learning to do the thing all over again. I hope I now have the time to do it. Hopefully the work I'm starting Monday is not stressful and since I don't have a relationship to constantly salvage from peril, the weight is off there too.

And this is my greatest comeback. The best revenge I'll have is become successful. Well, you know New York has low tolerance for losers (you heard me, Knicks?).

It started tonight with the World's Best 10k in San Juan. It will end in November with the 2010 New York Marathon. I really need it because I'm the fattest and most out of shape I've been in my life.
